Part of the Grec Festival of Barcelona
Small venues, unconventional corners, or interactive spaces become stages where the works take on a more intimate and experimental dimension.
With Òh!pera, the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Disseny Hub open the doors to a pioneering project that redefines the traditional concept of opera, embracing innovative formats that resonate with 21st-century sensibilities. This initiative, blending experimentation, interdisciplinarity, and creative risk, gives voice to new talents and artistic languages in a setting designed to provoke surprise and reflection.
The project, under the guidance of Àlex Ollé, is based on the creation of short operas that, despite their brevity, retain the essence of the genre: the fusion of music, dramaturgy, and stage direction. These works, conceived by emerging creators in collaboration with more established artists, explore contemporary themes such as identity, technology, ecology, and social conflict—bringing audiences closer to realities that echo our everyday lives.
One of the most compelling aspects of this project is its aim to explore alternative spaces within the theatre, breaking down the barrier between audience and stage. Small venues, unconventional corners, or interactive areas become stages where the works take on a more intimate and experimental dimension, offering the audience a close and surprising experience. This sense of proximity is also reflected in the dialogue between disciplines—music, theatre, set design, audiovisuals, costume, lighting—all coming together to shape productions that connect with the sensitivity of today’s audiences.
With Òh!pera, the Liceu and the Disseny Hub reaffirm their role as a driving force for cultural renewal in Catalonia and beyond. This laboratory of ideas and creation not only opens new paths for opera, but also invites audiences to rethink the performing arts from a more open and participatory perspective. Through its commitment to innovation and emerging talent, the Liceu pushes boundaries and reminds us that Art should not only preserve tradition, but also serve as a platform to imagine the future.
